Sooyoung is a South Korean singer and actress. She was a member of the Korean-Japanese duo group Route θ and is now a member of the South Korean girl group, Girls' Generation. She speaks fluent Korean & Japanese as well as conversational English.
Sooyoung is the sister of musical theater actress, Choi Soo-jin. She was discovered on SM Casting System via the 2000 SM Open Audition. She then auditioned for the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition and won first place, marking her debut into the Japanese music scene with the band Route θ.
After winning first place in the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo awards, Sooyoung was sent to Japan and debuted as a member of the duo Route θ, alongside Marina Takahashi. The band released three singles: "Waku! Waku! It's Love", "Start", and "Painting", and 3 B-Sides : Go Go Happy!!, Kimi Ni Ae Ta Kara (君に会えたから) and Onna No Ko Magic (女の子マジック). The group was later disbanded in 2003.
Sooyoung made her debut as a lyricist with the song "How Great Is Your Love", from Girls' Generation's Korean third album, The Boys, and, along with fellow members Yuri and Seohyun, wrote the song "Baby Maybe", from Girls' Generation's fourth album I Got a Boy.
Sooyoung's father suffers from retinitis pigmentosa and as a result, Sooyoung campaigns heavily to raise awareness of the illness and to raise funds in to find a cure. Most notably, in 2015 she hosted a charity auction called 'Beaming Effect', where many celebrities including her fellow SNSD members and labelmates Shinee and EXO donated many of their items for the auction. She also starred in a 2015 KBS special drama, Perfect Sense, pro bono, in order to help raise awareness for of those suffering with physical difficulties, in particular, visual impairment.
It was announced in January 2014 that Soo-young is in a relationship with the South Korean actor Jung Kyung-ho.
